Somat Engineering, Inc., (Somat) was the recipient of the 2019 National Society of Black Engineers Exceptional Small Business Award this past weekend, Friday, August 23, 2019. The Transportation and Infrastructure Special Interest Group nominated the company to be recognized during the Evening of Excellence Scholarship Gala that was held at the Marriott Mission Valley Hotel in San Diego, California. Sharmyn Elliott and Kim LeBlanc of Somat were present to accept the award on the company’s behalf.
At Somat, they fundamentally believe in their core values of choosing to do the right thing, taking responsibility, having integrity, acknowledging that people matter, providing quality services, all while enjoying the journey along the way. As a multi-discipline, professional engineering consultant, with operations throughout the Midwest and East Coast region, Somat keeps safety and the environmental impact of their work at their forefront, ensuring that their engineering innovations are sustainable solutions. They are a registered volunteer and sponsor for several activities including the MDOT Adopt-a Highway Program (with Michigan Department of Transportation) and the Mayor’s Grand River Cleanup. Somat also participates in a number of engineering-centric groups including the Geotechnical Group Seminar Series at the University of Michigan, ASCE and ACEC local college chapters, The Conference of Minority Transportation Officials (COMTO), ACE Mentoring Programs in Ohio, BASF Black History Month Diversity in the Workplace, and many other initiatives that foster diversity in the transportation industry.
The National Society of Black Engineers Transportation and Infrastructure Special Interest Group (T&I SIG) was formed in 2015 to foster a better understanding of the vast career opportunities in the transportation industry. The SIG is ecstatic to have Somat win this award!
