Arguably one of the more important aspects to the American Disabilities Act was the requirement to make transportation services and facilities accessible. Many people with disabilities cite access to transportation as a barrier to employment.
October is National Disability Employment Month which recognizes the contributions of persons with disabilities to work-related activities. With the passage of the ADA, persons with disabilities gained non-discriminatory access to employment, public services and more. Transportation providers play an important role in getting people with disabilities to and from their jobs. While some people may remote work, most people have to physically get to their place of employment and accessible transportation makes it possible for them to gain and maintain employment.
In 2017 COMTO created the COMTO Accessibility Committee to promote the involvement of persons with disabilities and recognizing the importance of accessibility.
