United Way of New York City Provides 3,000 Care Packages to MTA Employees

New York, NY – May 15, 2020: United Way of New York City (UWNYC) yesterday, May 14th, provided more than 3,000 food care packages to employees of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) in appreciation of their critical role supporting New York City during the COVID-19 pandemic. Packages are being distributed to essential, hard-working front-line teams across MTA maintenance shops, depots, stations and terminals, towers, and other locations across the system over the coming days. Packages were delivered to Corona Yard, Jamaica Yard, Coney Island Yard and 207th St. Yard and will be distributed to locations across MTA New York City Transit.

By ensuring emergency food providers and health care workers can stay on schedule in their work, New York City’s front-line transit workers not only play an essential role in the public health of the City, but many are also part of the same communities which need the most support now during COVID-19 with 70% of public transit employees being a person of color. These are communities that United Way of New York City has made a high priority in uplifting through the establishment of their COVID-19 Community Fund.

The core mission of United Way of New York City to support our City’s most vulnerable communities, both now and before COVID-19, would be virtually impossible without the contributions of the MTA,” said Sheena Wright, president and CEO of United Way of New York City. “New York City is America’s greatest transit city, and we all rely on the dedication and commitment of the MTA. Our transit workers deserve our assistance and appreciation now more than ever.”

To honor and show support to a family of MTA workers who both heavily contribute to the City’s recovery efforts and who have also been heavily affected by COVID-19. UWNYC convened a group of corporate partners to support this effort: Driscoll Foods, Amazon and Starbucks. UWNYC worked closely with the New York Chapter of the Conference of Minority Transportation Officials (COMTONY) on this effort.

Driscoll Foods, a long-time food service partner and tireless supporter of UWNYC’s work to support the City’s emergency food programs, curated the food for, assembled and delivered the care packages. Funding for the care packages’ food items was provided by Amazon. As part of this effort to honor our transit workers, Starbucks also provided 4,000 beverages which were delivered last week.
