2021 COMTO Industry Awards Shine a Light on Excellence in Transportation

Awards Recognize Accomplishments Which Took Place During the Height of the COVID-19 Pandemic

The Conference of Minority Transportation Officials (COMTO), a nonprofit organization founded in 1971 dedicated to advancing minorities in the transportation industry with 35 chapters in the U.S. and Canada, celebrated transportation’s shining stars at the 2021 COMTO Industry Awards Virtual Ceremony on Thursday, September 30, 2021.

Since 1985, COMTO’s Industry Awards have recognized individuals, organizations and COMTO Chapters who have made outstanding contributions to the transportation industry. COMTO Industry Awards honorees are from all sectors and modes of the industry.

The 2021 COMTO Industry Awards were presented to individuals, chapters and organizations for outstanding work completed in 2020—the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. The awards ceremony was part of COMTO’s 50th Anniversary Virtual National Meeting and Training Conference.

Highlights:

  • COMTO Miami won Best Community Engagement, Best Membership Recruitment & Retention, as well as, Chapter of the Year for the second year in a row.
  • Construction and Engineering Services Consultants, Inc. won Historically Underutilized Business (HUB) Firm of the Year and Corporation of the Year.
  • Palm Tran won Public Agency of the Year and Executive Director Clinton Forbes won Corporate Executive of the Year.

“This year’s Industry Awards demonstrates the resiliency of our members, chapters and industry. Faced with a pandemic which hit our industry hard, our honorees were able to continue the work of COMTO, remain committed to Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and serve our communities,” said Dr. Gwendolyn Boyd, Interim President & CEO, COMTO National.

2021 COMTO Industry Awards Recipients:

Emerging Leader of the Year: Donovan Calicker, Transportation Superintendent, Jacksonville Transportation Authority (JTA)

This award honors an individual who has been in the transportation industry for fewer than five years and demonstrates extraordinary competence in a transportation-related field by improving their leadership skills and having a strong commitment to the transportation industry and community.

Gerald Anderson Service Award: Yvette Janniere-Houlder, Lead Program Management – Enterprise Applications, New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA)

This award honors a COMTO member who demonstrates a commitment to the philosophy that the success of one is contingent upon the success of all. This award is how COMTO recognizes good service and the value of teamwork within the transportation industry and ensures growth and development within the industry and community.

Industry Innovation-Safety Award: Howard Wood, Executive Director, Drive Ohio, Supported by the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT)

This award honors an individual, organization, city or region for quantifiable and measurable innovative improvements within the transportation industry.

Corporate Executive of the Year: Clinton Forbes, Executive Director, Palm Tran 

This award honors a corporation or corporate executive whose corporation, through his or her leadership, consistently provides exemplary “above and beyond” support to COMTO by contributing to COMTO’s mission and goals both nationally and through their local COMTO chapter.

Public Agency of the Year: Palm Tran

This award recognizes a public agency that, through its policy, guidelines and actions consistently provide exemplary “above and beyond” support to COMTO by contributing to COMTO’s mission and goals both nationally and through its local COMTO chapter.

Reverend Jerry Moore President’s Leadership Award: Quincy Howard, Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (DBE) Program Administrator, Central Ohio Transit Authority (COTA)

This award honors a COMTO Chapter President who demonstrates exemplary leadership within COMTO, creates a significant impact in their local chapter and exemplifies solid leadership on the national level.

HUB Firm of the Year: Construction and Engineering Services Consultants, Inc.

This award honors a HUB that demonstrates a strong commitment to the transportation field and extraordinary competence in a chosen transportation-related field.

Corporation of the Year: Construction and Engineering Services Consultants, Inc.

This award honors a corporation that activities and leadership embrace the COMTO ideals and mission and consistently provides exemplary support to COMTO’s goals and objectives.

Thomas G. Neusom Founders’ Leadership Award: Darryl Haley, CEO & General Manager, Southwest Ohio Regional Transit Authority (SOTA)

This award is the highest honor bestowed by COMTO. It honors public and private transportation executives and policymakers who direct and operate their agency or organization and through their affiliation with COMTO provide outstanding contributions toward the growth and development of people of color within the transportation industry and continue outstanding service and leadership to the organization.

Best Community Engagement Award: COMTO Miami

This award honors an active COMTO chapter that demonstrates excellence in planning and implementing community activities or events that enhance COMTO’s brand image.

Best Membership Recruitment & Retention Award: COMTO Miami

This award honors an active COMTO chapter that demonstrates excellence in membership recruitment and retention. 

Chair’s Challenge Award: COMTO Michigan

This award honors the COMTO chapter who registered the greatest number of members for the COMTO National Meeting and Training Conference. COMTO national will donate $500 to a charity of their choice.

Emerging Chapter of the Year Award: COMTO Toronto and Region

This award honors a COMTO chapter that demonstrates a superior commitment to COMTO, helps enhance COMTO’s brand image within the transportation industry, shows significant achievement in increasing their local membership and implements successful transportation-related programs or projects within their community.

Chapter of the Year Award: COMTO Miami

This award is the highest honor bestowed upon a chapter for its outstanding service, activities and enhancement of COMTO’s brand image.
